frequently asked questions
WHAT INFORMATION WILL BE COVERED IN ART CLASS? The North Carolina Essential Standards for Art for grades K-5, including content integrated from the Common Core. If you would like to browse this document in a .pdf format, it can be found here at the NCDPI website:
http://www.dpi.state.nc.us/docs/acre/standards/new-standards/arts/visual/k-8.pdf.
HOW CAN FAMILIES HELP? I love volunteers in the art room! All volunteers must have WCPSS clearance. This must be done at the beginning of the year via a computer in the Media Center. It must be done in person, on campus. It cannot be done remotely. If you have not done so already, please visit the school at your earliest convenience and sign up on the computer by the Media Center circulation desk. Once you've been cleared as a volunteer, please send me an email: [email protected]. Please also see the "Volunteer" information at the bottom of this page.
IS THERE AN "ART WISH LIST?" YES! Donations are wonderful! We especially need paper donations of any size/color/weight, matboard scraps and matboard scrap windows from professional framers, and technology. If you have upgraded the technology in your home recently, the art room has a need for a laptop less than 5 years old, a gently used iPod touch, or a used iPad (or iPad mini). There is a Laurel Park Art Room Wish List on Amazon.com for art books to use in the classroom.
DO YOU SEND OUT REGULAR UPDATES ABOUT THE ART PROGRAM? YES! The best way to stay informed is to have an Artsonia account for your child/ren by returning a signed permission form to me (Mrs. McClelland) at school. The email address you provide when you give permission for your child's work to be published on that website will also register you for the e-newsletter updates I send about current learning in art, special announcements, and occasionally information about the other specials programs (PE, Spanish, Music, Technology, Media, Health). You can follow me on Twitter (@Dar9), and through Artsonia (Laurel Park Elementary in Apex, NC). Buttons for some of these social media sites are provided at the top of the page.
WHEN WILL MY CHILD PAINT HIS OR HER HANDPRINT ON THE WALL AT SCHOOL? Handprints are done for Kindergarten on their staggered entry day at the beginning of the year. After the first week of school in July, handprints are done on track-out days throughout the year.
WHAT SHOULD MY CHILD WEAR TO ART CLASS? We often use materials that have the potential to make a mess: tempera paint, liquid watercolors, printmaking ink, acrylic paint, clay, glazes and more. Every effort is made to keep students clean, but accidents sometimes do happen. Students will wear large art shirts to cover their clothes when we use messy materials, but please ask your child to dress in older play clothes on Art days.
HOW OFTEN WILL MY CHILD HAVE ART CLASS? Your child will come to the art room for approximately 45 minutes every 5 or 6 days when your child and I are both tracked in. Grades K-3 are on a 6 day rotation. Grades 4 and 5 are on a 5 day rotation. Visual Art is one of the "Specials" at LPES along with Music, PE, Media, Spanish, and Technology.
WHAT TRACK IS ART ON? Art is Track 1. I am the only art teacher. There are no art classes when I am tracked out. Students will attend either Music, Spanish, PE, Technology or Media instead.
WHO ATTENDS ART CLASSES AT LPES? All students in grades K-5.
HOW DO WE CONTACT THE ART TEACHER? Email ([email protected]) is the easiest way to contact me. I usually check my email at 8:45 a.m. and after school. You can also call the school at 919 290-2333 and leave a message with the front office staff. I will return your call as soon as possible.

Parents who would like to register to volunteer for the first time are also welcome to do so on our media center's computers during those times. *Please note: From November 5, 2012 - May 20, 2013, the volunteer system will only be open on Mondays from 8-4, so please reactivate/register early. Please let us know if you have any questions. We always look forward to having volunteers in our school!

Other jobs include laminating, gluing artwork to construction paper mats, adding name tags, and helping with Artsonia. No art experience necessary!
SPECIAL EVENT HELPERS
Volunteers are also needed at certain times of the year to help with Fine Arts Night (the months of April and May), and regularly scheduled off campus art shows (October, March). Information will go home via the Penguin Press with links to Sign Up Genius.
